Russia and Italy join forces

Cooperative development of unmanned aircraft planned

Published: 2/29/2000

Russia and Italy have agreed in principle to a cooperative agreement on the development of an unmanned aircraft. The agreement was reached during a recent meeting in Italy of the Russian-Italian military hardware cooperation committee. Although no further details have emerged, it may well be that the cooperation will be between Yakovlev and Aeromacchi. They are already cooperating on the Yak-130 and Yakolev has produced the Stroi-P UAV system, extensively used in both of the Chechen campaigns. The system, however, lacks an internationally competitive thermal imager and other sensors. A cooperative agreement could seek to remedy these shortcomings and so develop the product for a wider market.
