Il-76 engine incident in Domodedovo

Fire in one of the aircraft's engine aborts take off

Published: 3/2/2000

Il-76 engine incident in Domodedovo On the 24th February, an Il-76 belonging to East Line Airline (ESL) discovered a fire in one of the aircraft"s engines during take-off. The aircraft aborted the take-off and came to a safe halt on the runway. According to ESL executive director, Amirani Kurtanidze, the Il-76 was taking off after a stopover in Domodedovo, en route from Luxembourg to Khanty-Mansiysk. During 1998 ESL reported 14 minor incidents but no major accidents. The following year saw the same number of incidents and one accident. Twelve out of 14 incidents in 1999 were caused by technical failures in-flight, including four separate engine shutdowns. The only accident in 1999 took place on 10 July, when an East Line Il-76 collided with a cargo terminal at Ermolino. According to Kurtanidze, the accident was caused by human error, when one of the crew inadvertently turned off the braking system after landing. The aircraft, with engines operating at ground-idle mode, ran into the nearby cargo terminal and was severely damaged, luckily with no injuries. This ill-fated flight was crewed by a team hired from Domodedovo Airlines.
