Restoration of Yugoslav flights begin
Austrian Airlines and two Yugoslav airlines have announced that they are resuming flights to and from Serbia, following their suspension during the Kosovo crisis. The European Union adopted the air embargo against Serbia on 7th September 1998 over Belgrade's Kosovo policies. The embargo was suspended for six months on 14th February.
Pending approval from the Belgrade government, Austrian Airlines expects to resume flights to the Yugoslav capital from 27th March, with five flights a week. Yugoslav Avia Transport company (YAT) reopened its flights from Serbia to western European countries on 22nd February, with services resumed to Paris, Athens, Milan, Salonika, Berlin, Copenhagen, Stockholm, London and other cities.
The Yugoslav state carrier JAT also resumed flights to Zurich on 22nd February, operating a schedule of five flights a week rising to seven during the summer. JAT spokesman, Milutin Prsic, said that he expected JAT to start reopening flight services to EU countries in the next ten days. Planned destinations include Paris, Athens, Milan, Berlin, Frankfurt, Copenhagen, Stockholm, London and Amsterdam.
