Russians reject Azeri offer for ATC fees

1st January ban still stands

Published: 4/6/2000

Azabaijan"s problems in the civil aviation sector have not improved recently with the failure of talks between the Russia and Azabaijan regarding the non-payment of $3m by AZAL, the national carrier, to the Russian ATC company Rosaeronavigatsiya. The non-payment of the debt has led to the flights of AZAL being forbidden to cross Russia since 1st January 2000. The government proposed an offset of the debt against Russian payments for a radar facility within Azerbaijan; this was however rejected despite the fact, according to Azeri sources, that the Russia owes $5 million of rent for the Gabala station. Given the dead lock it is now uncertain how the struggling carrier will payoff the debts.
