Tu-214 and India

Ilyushin and Hindustan Aeronautics in discussions

Published: 5/19/2000

According to media reports, Ilyushin is in negotiations with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the joint creation of the cargo version of the Il-214, the Il-214T. The Il-214 programme was first muted in March 1999, when Ilyushin and HAL signed a general agreement, which mentioned the intention of developing a 100-seat airline, the Il-214 and a cargo version designated the Il-214T, the latter to be produced within five years depending on the availability of funding. The new aircraft will have a range of 2000 kms with a 15 tonnes payload and takeoff weight of 47.9 tonnes and will be powered by P&W PW6000 engines, with the possibility that Russian engines developed by Kuznezov may be offered as an option according to reports. According to sources within Ilyushin however, despite recent press interest, Indian interest in the programme has waned and there have been no contacts for the last three months.
