A duty-free area has opened at Katowice International Airport at Pyrzowice, making it according to Marek Mutke, President of the airport's owners for the last seven years Gornoslaskie Towarzystwo Lotnicze (Upper Silesisan Aviation Society), Poland's second regional airport with its own duty-free facilities.
The management expects 200,000 passengers and 3,000 tonnes to pass through the airport in 2000, a significant improvement on the 27,000 passengers and 80 tonnes prior to the airport's $13.6m modernisation programme in 1998/1999. There are further plans for development of the airport's runways and taxiways to meet the capacity of the 4,500 square metre terminal capable of handling 700,000passengers a year.
Currently Pyrzowice has flights provided by a number of airlines including Lufthansa to Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Dusseldorf and Vienna, with charter flights to Southern Europe and Tunisia.
