Published: 6/2/2000

Two aircraft belonging to Air Ukraine have been seized by the UK's Civil Aviation Authority at London's Luton and Stansted Airports. The aircraft, a Tu-134 and a Yak-42, were impounded on behalf of the European ATC authority Eurocontrol due to unpaid debts to the organisation amounting to a reported €2m. The Yak was allowed to leave on the afternoon of Thursday 1st June , the Tu-134 was however retained . Negotiations are taking place between the airline and Eurocontrol The planes were carrying the national soccer team and the press corps to a friendly game against the English national side ahead of the opening of the Euro 2000 competition. England won the game 2-0 in a fast and aggressive game. All fans, officials and team were reported to have returned to Kiev on Thursday.
