Inauguration of Chisinau International Airport

Renovated airport expected to handle increased passenger numbers

Petru Luchinschi, President of Moldova, has inaugurated the renovated Chisinau International Airport on 16th June, along with a new ATC centre for Moldatsa acquired at a cost of $4.5m. The work on the terminal was undertaken by Turkish company Axen-Suma over the last 18 months at a cost of $9.3m out of a total cost of $13m, with funding provided by the EBRD at LIBOR plus one and with a maturity of 2011 and Moldova providing $3m.The loan will be repaid through a tax of $14 per ticket The renovation involved the extensive rebuilding of the 12,000-metre terminal's facilities and the addition of new facilities for the 17 airlines that use the airport. The airport is expected to handle 300,000 passengers this year after 250,00 in 1999, with numbers expected to increase by 635,000 by 2011, according to Valeriu Macari, the airports director.
