Korean contract for helicopter

US and Russian suppliers in competition (110 words)

According to reports in the Korea Times, the competition for the 2 trillion won attack helicopter contract has narrowed down to US and Russian suppliers as the South Africans and Europeans announced their intention not to participate. The Russian side, represented by Mil (Mi-28) and Kamov (Ka-50), according to the Ministry of Defence will submit their bids for the 40-helicopter contract on Wednesday. The contract, which called for a twin-engine helicopter capable of 240km/hr will start delivery after 2004. The MoD will short list contenders by late September, with tests following and a final decision by the latter part of the first half of 2001.
