Lift-off for Okecie Airport at last? (200 words)
Published:
8/14/2000
Porty Lotnicze PPL, the state airport operator of Warsaw's airport, has finally opened a tender worth $300m for the construction of new terminal at Okecie Airport with a capacity of 6.5m passengers a year. The tender, to provide essential capacity to the overstretched airport, was expected to have been already been decided by the second half of 2000. It remains unclear whether the authorities remain on a similar timetable, given that the tender has been pushed back from the original timetable of January 2000 and uncertainty regarding how the project will be funded.
The contract will include the building of the new Terminal 2, extensions to the existing Terminal 1 to bring its capacity up to 6m, a new apron and the construction of an underground railway station. The work is expected to be finished within 36 months of signing of the contract according to an advertisement in Polish daily Rzeczpospolita. Offers have to be submitted by September of this year and given the size and experience requirements of the project, the successful bidder is likely to be a consortium of Polish and foreign companies, of which a number already exist including Exbud and Skanska.
