Lvov Airlines' payment for Yak-42 victims

Greek courts claim negligence by the airline (160 words)

Published: 8/24/2000

Lvov Airlines, which provided the aircraft and crew for the ill-fated AeroSvit Yak-42 flight from Kiev to Thessalonika has beeen ordered to make two payments of $1.6m to the families of two victims by the Greek courts. The plane crashed with the loss of all on board in Greece in 1997. According to the Greek Transport Ministry, the Ukrainian carrier was operating without radio navigation equipment and the crew negligently contributed to the crash into Greece's Mount Olympus. For the families of the remaining 68 people killed in the crash, the court order could set a precedent, but will take a considerable amount of time to clear through the Greek legal system. AeroSvit, despite not providing the aircraft, lost its licence to carry passengers to Greece under the bilateral agreement and subsequently swapped routes with Air Ukraine for routes to Turkey and Bulgaria.
