Crash at Ukrainian air show

2nd International Aerospace Show AVIASVIT-XXI marred by death of amateur pilot (150 words)

Published: 9/21/2000

A crash of a Yak-52 at the 2nd International Aerospace Show AVIASVIT-XXI in the Ukraine piloted by an amateur pilot, has cast a cloud over the event designed to demonstrate Ukrainian capabilities in aerospace. The crash on the 16th September near Antonov's air base led to the death of First Deputy Minister of Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs and General-Colonel of Ukraine's Militia Leonid Borodich. Is being seen by some, as a reflection of the general condition of Ukrainian aviation with most of the countries air schools closed and companies that do operate aircraft finding it difficult to source fuel and fund maintenance resulting in pilots both amateur and professional getting little in the way of hours therefore contributing to the likelihood of this unfortunate incident.
