Transaero adds new route

Russian carrier finally gets fees for over-flights (158 words)

Published: 3/8/2001

Transaero and China Airlines will begin operating a Moscow -Taipei route in October, according to the Russian carrier. The once-a-week flights will, according to Transaero Chairman, Alexander Pleshakov, use A-310s. With additional aircraft, it will carry 400-450 passengers per week by the 2002 summer season. EVA, an affiliate of transportation conglomerate Evergreen Marine, last week became the first Taiwanese carrier to over-fly Russian territory, with its scheduled thrice weekly direct flights to Paris. The flights will generate between $4 million and $5 million per annum in air navigation and over-flight fees, says Transaero. For the first time, Transaero - as the official carrier under the bilateral agreement - will receive the over-flight portion of the fee, which has traditionally gone to Aeroflot: the latter situation having been regarded by the private carrier as unacceptable on routes where it has been official carrier for some time.
