Kazak carrier closes routes

Taldy-Kurgan air routes cannot compete with taxi service (114 words)

Published: 3/16/2001

Zhetysu Airlines, based at Taldy- Kurgan in Kazakhstan, has stopped flying from Taldy-Kurgan to Astana and Almaty, having only opened the routes in April 2000. Despite the low price of flights, the operator has been unable to attract passengers to these routes. It appears that although the flight to Almaty lasts only 40-45 minutes, the lack of access to the airport and the poor ground handling at both Taldy-Kurgan and Almaty make the 3 to 3.5 hour taxi trip (at a similar price to the air ticket) a more attractive option. Zhetsyu is estimated to have lost 9m tenge ($62,000).
