Published: 4/6/2001

According to reports from Reuters a Mi-35P gunship (export version of the Mi-24P) recently delivered to the Nigerian Air Force caught fire on the 6th April. A Nigerian Air Force spokesperson said that the Mi-35, which went into service on Tuesday, caught fire shortly after refueling at Osubi Airstrip in the Niger Delta oil town of Warri. No one was hurt. The deal to buy an undisclosed number of Mi-35s was struck in 1999 with a reported value of $100m, with two helicopters being delivered according to reports, in September of 2000, for the protection of oil installations.
