According to Jahangir Askerov, President of AZAL, the Azerbaijan state air holding entity, the privatisation of aviation entities is unlikely to be concluded within five years, owing to the organisational work involved.
He added, however, that the privatisation model had been developed, starting with the national airline company, Azerbaijan Hava Yollari‚ followed by AZAL Helicopters, which operates helicopters services, largely in the Caspian region and AZAL Cargo. AZAL's joint ventures will subsequently be privatised.
Under the terms of the sale of Azerbaijan Hava Yollari, the purchaser will be required to buy, from the government, the two Boeing 757-200s that are currently operated by the airline, but owned by the state.
