Russia agrees $12.2m deal with Indonesia

MVZ to supply overhauled Mi-2s and Mi-171s to Indonesian Navy (160 words)

Published: 5/16/2001

On 14th May 2001, Aviaexport and MVZ signed a $12.2m agreement with the Indonesian Navy in Jakarta, for the purchase of eight overhauled Mi-2s and two overhauled Mi-171s, adapted for marine operations and in civilian configuration. For Russia, the deal marks a further return to discussions with Indonesia, after 1997 plans for the purchase of 12 Su-30s and eight Mi-171Bs were derailed by the country's financial crisis. This latest contract follows an earlier $16.8m agreement, reached in 2000, for four new Mi-171Bs. MVZ is reported to have come up with the idea of offering the hard-pressed Indonesian Navy the overhauled aircraft, but had to negotiate the deal through Aviaexport, given that it was not licensed. The cost of an overhauled Mi-171B is reported to be $2.1. On this basis, $1m for the Swidnik assembled Mi-2s seems to be on the high side.
