Collision on the ground damages Il-96-300 and Il-62

Taxiing areas not large enough (120 words)

Published: 6/5/2001

An Il-96-300, operated by Domededovo Airlines (DA), has been damaged, as a result of a collision with an SAT Il-62, while taxiing at Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Airport on 2nd June, after landing. The aircraft sustained damage to its right wing when it collided with the rudder of the Il-62. According to Andrey Lobkin, General Director of the airport, the Il-96-300 sustained less damage than the Il-62. As to the cause of the collision, an investigation is underway, but Lobkin did acknowledge that, while the runways can take larger aircraft, the taxiways and parking were constructed with the Tu-154 in mind. For SAT, the collision may cause some problems if, indeed, it is the aircraft leased from the Sakhalin regional authorities that it recently sold to an unnamed Moscow carrier.
