Not all lost for MiG-AT

Chances in Indian tender are resurrected (188 words)

Published: 6/11/2001

It is emerging that recent discussions connected with the visit to Russia of the Indian Defence Minister Jaswant Singh may have revived MiG's expectation that the MiG-AT remains a contender in the Indian competition for trainer aircraft. The contract appeared to have been lost early this year, with the announcement that India had opted for the BAe Systems Hawk and a deal to lease Alpha Jets, to cover the period before delivery. The recent announcement, that the aircraft's Larzac 02-R20, reported to be considered underpowered by the Indians, is to be upgraded with the Larzac 04U43 rated at 1,700 kg, may have swung the balance back in favour of the Russian producer. The contract for 66 aircraft itself has also been the subject of intense discussions within India, related to allegations of corruption and its finalisation was delayed, while the process was subjected to added scrutiny. In mid-July, RSK MiG and Rosoboronexport are due to make a representation of the aircraft in India for the production of 24 aircraft in Russia and the balance, locally under licence.
