Yakutsk Airport runs out of money for runway

Shortage of funds threaten completion of construction project (131 words)

According to local media reports, Yakutsk Airport cannot complete the reconstruction of its only operational runway, already delayed by shortages of funding. The airport's second runway was closed several years ago due to its poor condition. The reports claim that the $3.3m project, which has received $1.1m of federal funding, remains short of $0.5m needed for completion by St. Petersburg-based Aerotechcentre and subcontractors, including the 26th Research Institute of the Ministry of Defence and an unspecified German company. There are also rumours that the airport authorities plan to fire the unnamed German company in order to reduce costs. Completion of the project could be delayed by another year, adding substantially to the original two-year schedule.
