Published: 10/12/2001

Despite problems with its local carriers, GUAP Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Airport has reported that revenues have risen by 30% in the first nine months of 2001, to Rb103.3m ($3.6m): an increase of 50% on the same period in 2000. Over the period there were 2,360 takeoffs in contrast to the 2,225 in the first nine months of 2000, including 470 on international routes (495 in the same period of 2000). The international routes are primarily provided by Sakhalin Aviatrassy (SAT) flying to Sapporo, Pusan, Hakkodate, and Seoul, Asiana Airlines to Seoul and by Reeve Aleutian Airways making charter flights to South Korea, Japan, and USA in support of the oil and gas companies working offshore on the Sakhalin shelf. Passengers numbers for domestic flights were up by 8%, at 108,446 passengers and international traffic grew by 6% to 14,808. The principal carriers were SAT(37,547 passengers) and Domodedovo Airlines (26,875) flying to Moscow, with lesser numbers carried by Dalavia (24,753), Vladivostokavia (12,098) and KrasAir (6,762) to Khabarovsk and Vladivistok.
