Sibir to sue Ukraine

Airline calculates multi-million dollar claim for damages resulting from the Tu-154 crash (129 words)

Published: 10/15/2001

Siberia Airlines (Sibir) has reported that intends to sue the Ukrainian government for damages, following the shooting down of one of its Tu-154s on 4th October by a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile. According to Mikhail Koshman from Sibir, the airline had not yet fully calculated the amount of the damages that it would seek, but he did say that the direct costs to the airline exceed $10m, including the cost of the aircraft and the search and rescue effort as a result of the crash. Koshman made it clear that Sibir would be seeking "substantially larger" compensation than this, given what he described as the negative impact on the airline's corporate image and business.
