WTO membership still high on Russia's agenda

Putin stresses commitment to accession within the current timeframe (126 words)

Published: 10/18/2001

President Putin, speaking at an inaugural meeting of a business association, has reaffirmed that the administration still has the goal of WTO accession. The president's commitment comes despite the fact that the benefits of WTO membership would be reduced by the reality that much of Russia's production would be uncompetitive in a more liberalised environment. More practically, Putin promised that the next raft of deregulation laws related to complying with WTO on issues such as non-tariff barriers would be submitted in draft to the State Duma, either by the end of the year or early in 2002. This indicates that Putin is determined to keep the 2003 WTO accession timetable.
