Mi-8 crashes in Sierra Leone

An apparent explosion brings down helicopter operating on UN contract (113 words)
Published:
11/9/2001
An Mi-8, working on contract for the United Nations (UN) mission in Sierra Leone, has crashed with the loss of seven people on board. Witnesses report an explosion, but it is not yet known what caused the accident, nor to which operator the helicopter belongs.
According to Inessa Gousseva of Tyumenaviatrans (TAT), it was not one of TAT's Mi-8s operating in Sierra Leone and it may have been owned by one of the Ukrainian operators under contract to the UN. Tyumenaviatrans currently has two Mi-26s, four Mi-8 MTWs and two Mi-8Ts working in the country for the UN.
