Mi-8T crash

11 deaths as Delta-K helicopter goes down in mountainous terrain in Yakutia (119 words)

Published: 11/12/2001

On 9th November 2001, an Mi-8T belonging to Sakha-Yakutia based airline, Delta-K, crashed in Yakutia killing all eleven people on board. The helicopter crashed en route from its home base at Chulman to another settlement in Yakutia, in mountainous, heavily forested country. An investigation team is currently examining the incident, but reports have suggested that the aircraft collided into a 1636m mountain. The possibility of mechanical failure is being dismissed by Delta-K, which insists that the helicopter was “quite new” and was not overloaded as it was carrying 1320kg: well within its limits of 4000kg. Delta-K added that the crew was experienced on the route.
