Published: 11/28/2001

On 26th November, Il-76s belonging to the Russian Military Transport Aviation (VTA) landed at the semi-derelict Bagram Air Base 30kms outside of Kabul. The 12 aircraft are reported to have been carrying building materials and aid, along with staff for the Russian Embassy, into the British-controlled air base. The initial flights were followed by a further two flights by Il-76s belonging to the Ministry for Emergency Situations (MChS) on 27th November, delivering 100 tonnes of humanitarian assistance, including a field hospital. A further 100 tonnes is to be delivered on MChS Il-76s on 28th November. Elsewhere, Russian carrier Volga Dnepr has been delivering more than fifty Volvo trucks on behalf of the World Food Programme for the delivery of Afghan relief supplies, from Tallin in Estonia to Ashkhabad in Turkmenistan. The airline says that the An-124-100s used have been carrying eight trucks per flight. The truck delivery follows earlier deliveries of jeeps and mobile kitchens
