12/18/2001
According to Gleb Osokin of Siberia Airlines (Sibir) on the 15th December 2001 Kemerovo Airport has brought into the operation its new 3200 m runway replacing the much repaired 2700m runway that had been built in the early 1960s.
According to Oskin, a Sibir Il-86 carried representatives of the Ministries of Transportation, Property and Finances to check the runway and approve it for operation. During the opening of the runway Sergei Frank, the Minister of Transportation suggested that the airport"s location promised considerable development at of the airline as a transit hub.
Sibir has operated out of Kemerovo routes since acquiring local carrier C Air, an airline that had grown out of Kemerovo Airlines. In 1998 Sibir established a new airline and hired the staff from C Air that was in poor financial condition according to Sibir, and now employs 60 people in the city. The airline has its own travel agency, with a number of major local companies such as Kuzbassugol (a coal company), Kuzbassenergo (utility), Kuzbassnefteproduct (oil refinery) and Azot (chemical producer) as corporate clients.
