New heads for Rybinsk

Published: 10/29/1997

The Joint-Stock Company Rybinsk Motors (RM), the largest Russian engine-maker with 19,000 staff, changed its leaders on 2 September when the council of directors elected Anatoly Vishnyakov its chairman and appointed Yuri Lastochkin the executive general director. Vishnyakov graduated from the Rybinsk Institute of Aviation Technologies with a degree in aircraft engines. "The capital construction is the area of investment where any expenditure can bring considerable income afterwards. Investing in capital construction means laying foundations for the future". Former director for resources, economics and finance, Lastochkin is a graduate from the Jaroslav State University with a degree in economics. He represents a new generation of Volga businessmen. Upon his appointment, Lastochkin said, "The major criteria for improving the competitiveness of our products should be increasing the production output up to the ultimate capacity with a simultaneous rise in the profitability, volume of sales and geography of partnership. We can achieve it by investing in the development of industrial and technical facilities of the enterprise". In 1996, RM production output was Rbs680bn, volume of sales Rbs779.4bn, profit Rbs122.1bn. In 1997, the production rise planned is 190%, volume of sales 200%, profit 248%. The rise comes chiefly from using high aviation technologies in production of industrial turbines. In 1996, Rbs75.9bn was invested into the modernisation of the enterprise, with 60% into capital construction. In 1997 it is planned to spend Rbs50bn on new equipment, Rbs45.7bn on capital construction and Rbs6bn on computer-aided design systems. Rybinsk Motors has manufactured over 7,600 D-30-series engines for Tu-154M, Il-76 and Il-62M aircraft, with 4,500 remaining in use. Current monthly output is 50 D-30s. The latest contracts for RM are: RAO Gazprom, worth Rbs150bn, for industrial turbines; Ministry of Emergencies, for D-30 engines on its Il-76s; INCOMbank-arranged $20m deal for 40 D-30s for Aeroflot Aviacor factory, for 36 engines for newly-built Tu-154Ms. In December 1996 Rybinsk Motors and General Electric founded a joint venture for local production of CT-7 engines and LM-2500 industrial turbines, and the manufacture of parts for the CF-6 and CFM-56 engines.(IN1097.2) (VK)
