Russian safety levels "not inferior to the west"

Although Russian civil aviation aircraft burn 25-30% more fuel than modern western aircraft, a high safety standard is maintained, Gennady Zaitsev, the director of the Federal Aviation Service (FAS) tells ConCISe.
According to Zaitsev, 76% of the world fleet consume on average 20-25 grams of fuel per passenger-km. In Russia only 6% of the fleet are as economic.
Russian airlines are spending over 25% of all expenses on aviation fuel, whereas world airlines spend only 8-12%. (IN1097.6) (VZ)
