Moscow airport gets international cargo status after the event
Published:
10/4/1999
Ramenskoye Airport at Zhukovsky, on the outskirts of Moscow, has been granted international status as a cargo airport, following the signing, by Prime Minister Putin, of a special resolution on 29th September. In August 1999, the airport was granted permission for international cargo
transportation. The 29th September resolution excludes limits for servicing foreign cargo aircraft.
Ramenskoye Airport and Chkalovsky Airport account for 30% of cargo transportation in Moscow air transport hub.
It seems from reports that the granting of international status to Ramenskoye is probably an acceptance of the high level of unofficial cargo activity already occurring at the airport and an attempt to bring it under some kind of official control, as well as bringing in some revenues to fund the infrastructure of the struggling airport.
