IAR Soim production threatened

Romanian Ministry of Defence seeks funds for trainer

Published: 2/21/2000

The Romanian Ministry of Defence is reported to be seeking further funding of $20m for the Avioane IAR-99 Soim (Hawk) advanced trainer/light attack aircraft programme in order to continue production. The aircraft, powered by a Rolls Royce Viper engine, first flew in 1985 and 21 have been delivered to the Romanian Air Force, of which 13 are believed to be still in service. A further order was made in 1998 by the Romanian Air Force for additional aircraft with avionics upgrades from Elbit, including existing aircraft retrofits. The Hawk is considered by the Romanians to be the equal of its namesake, BAe Hawk, and considerably cheaper. Whether or not this logic will convince the cash-strapped Romanian government remains to be seen.
