Aircraft go to sea

Su-33(Su-27K) gets carrier deployment on Admiral Kuznetsov in the Northern Fleet

Published: 2/24/2000

According to General-Lieutenant Ivan Fedin, Head of the Navy Aviation Headquarters, the Russian Navy has created a third new carrier-based squadron of Su-33s, on the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier, which is part of the Northern Fleet. The aircraft was formally accepted into naval aviation at the end of August 1998, and, according to recent reports, the Navy has 20 of the single seat air defence fighter, otherwise known as the Su-27K, although it has been reported that the production plant, KnAPPO, intended to have a production run of 50 aircraft. The Russian Navy has operated the Su-33 from the Admiral Kuznetsov during the mid-nineties in operational trials and, temporarily, during late 1995. From the report, this seems to be the first full time deployment at sea of aircraft taken from the land-based 279th Regiment.
