Cargo recovery in January

Russian cargo statistic show January pickup

The Russian statistics agency Goskomstat reports that, in January, air cargo transport increased by 10.3% over the depressed volumes of January 1999. This improvement was after a dramatic decline in shuttle trade volume: historically, a major driver of the cargo market. The statistics record that changes in customs regulations in 1998, combined with the financial crisis, pushed volumes down by 31.1% in 1999. Trade volume overall was $11.5 billion, of which the west made up $8.5 billion and the FSU $3 billion.
