Kazakh student pilots benefit from Russian gift

Aircraft provided for training purposes

Published: 3/3/2000

Kazakh student pilots benefit from Russian gift/ Fourteen Russian-manufactured planes of unspecified type are reported to have landed at a military airfield, near Aktyubinsk in Kazakhstan. Produced in 1990, the aircraft should be good for another 15 years. They are gifted by Russia in order to enable students at the Military Aviation Academy to increase their total flying time to 150 hours, so meeting flight training requirements for civil aviation pilots operating An-2 aircraft. The Kazakhstan military is currently recovering from both the scandal involving the illegal export of MiG-21s to North Korea and also a dramatic short fall in defence expenditure that has left the air force extremely short of funds for training.
