Estonian Air grounds Boeing

Airline considers re-leasing plane abroad

Published: 3/16/2000

Estonian Air has announced that, from 26th March 2000, it will maintain four aircraft in operation to serve its scheduled flights and will ground its fifth plane, a Boeing, from that date, with a view to re-leasing it abroad. Raymond Made, spokesman for the airline, would not reveal any details of the options being considered, but confirmed that fixed expenses were such that the aircraft could not be kept idle. Estonian Air will drop its scheduled flights between Tallinn and Helsinki and use its fleet of two Boeings and two Fokker aircraft to fly to 10 other destinations in its spring schedule. The flights to Helsinki were introduced as part of its winter 1999 programme. Their cancellation, together with the grounding of the Boeing, suggest that the airline's business in 2000 does not look quite so promising.
