Aluminium theft at Bryansk
|
|
Propeller blades have been lost from An-2
Published:
5/18/2000
It seems that even for struggling Russian airlines crime remains a problem. Bryansk Airlines servicing passengers in Central Russia at the end of April lost two aluminium blades out of the four fitted to the 3.6m diameter propeller of an An-2 parked at Bryansk Airport.
Vasily Yuzhenko, the General Director of the airline, which also owns the airport, commented that the incident deprived the airline of its last flyable An-2. The Bryansk militia were reported to be looking for the culprits.
Theft of non-ferrous metals has become something of a crime wave in Russia, as thieves steal the metal from almost any source to trade it for cash. Articles stolen include pans, cups and probably much more seriously, power cables, often leading to power outages.
