Published: 8/8/2000

On the 28th July a 2-seat sport Yak-52 belonging to ROSTO (Russian Defenсе Sports Technical Organisation) crashed on shore of Lake Etkul 40km from Chelyabinsk, with the death of both the pilot and trainee. According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations an enquiry is underway. ROSTO's function is to train pilots, instructors and maintenance personnel in the general aviation sector, specifically training cadets from special schools and boarding schools, as well as candidates entering the air forces academies. It also has the function of training teams for aerobatic competitions. ROSTO includes 101 base aerodromes within its structure, of which 91 are staffed by its 5000 personnel and 55 air and air sport clubs including two all-Russian clubs (Central Aroclub named after Chkalov in Moscow and Central Glider Aeroclub in Orel), Kaluga Aviation and Technical School, Moscow Aircraft Repair Plant and the Shahta Aircraft Repair Plant, responsible for the maintenance of the Yak-52 in Russia. The fleet includes more than 2300 aircraft including Yak-52, An-2, Mi-2, Vilga-35, Yak-55, L-39. Additionally ROSTO has 376 gliders and more than 700 hang gliders (about 6000 hang-gliders if the clubs are taken into account).
