Sakhalin Airlines (SAT) is reported to be possibly starting charter flights from Japan to the Kurile Islands allowing Japanese former inhabitants of the islands to visit under a visa fee scheme.
The first flight by An-24 is scheduled for the 29th October 2000 allowing an alternative to the sea crossing, which is only possible between April and October.
The Japanese authorities have only recently accepted the offer of the flights according to SAT, but now that it has been agreed the airline is optimistic about more regular flights.
Based in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, SAT currently operates 1 Boeing 737, 7 An-24, 1 An-26, 2 IL-62. SAT flies to China, Korea, Japan, Moscow, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Khabarovsk, and serves intraregional routes on Sakhalin Island.
