Aeroflot to pay 2000 dividend

Although reported to be more than they wanted(134 words)

Published: 4/10/2001

Aeroflot's board has recommended a dividend of Rb0.03 per share for 2000, which if approved at the company's AGM on the 19th of May will cost the airline $1.15 m. The dividend follows payments of Rb0.01 in 1999 and Rb0.0082 in 1998 about 0.035 cents in both cases. According to press reports, the airline wished to pay a smaller dividend of Rb0.022, but was pressed by the government, its 51.17% shareholder, to pay a higher amount. The suggestion has been made that the government was eager to recover lost tariffs on Aeroflot's aircraft imports. The difference of magnitude between the actual and rumoured dividends however, makes this an implausible scenario, but it does hint at some of the tensions that do exist between the airline's management and the government on the subject of imported aircraft.
