Chief Designer leaves strong legacy (110 words)
Published:
5/15/2001
On 12th May 2001, Alexey Tupolev, Chief Designer of the Tupolev Design Bureau died. He was 75.
Tupolev, the son of Andrey Tupolev, founder of the bureau, had been its General Designer since 1973. He participated in the development of many of the workhorses of Soviet and Russian aviation, such as the Tu-154 and, more recently, the Tu-204. Yet it will be for his contribution to the supersonic Tu-144 - nicknamed the “Concordsky” - that he will be best remembered. The Tu-144, grounded after a series of crashes and for being economically unviable, recently flew in a joint Tu-144LL US/Russian test programme.
