USA buyers evaluating purchase (122 words)
Published:
6/14/2001
According to Alexander Pukhov, Chief Designer of OAO Tupolev, the company may sell its flying laboratory variant of the Tu-144 - the Tu-144LL - to a buyer in the USA. He added that two buyers had been identified, but conceded that negotiations “are not developing as fast as desired”.
The aircraft has been grounded since it was last used as a flying laboratory, three years ago, by NASA, Boeing and Tupolev, as part of a research programme on the creation of a 2nd generation supersonic passenger aircraft. Pukhov claims that the aircraft is still completely viable, if purchased, in contrast to a previous Tu-144, which ended up in a German museum.
