Sibir's regional dominance grows

The airline leads the growing Siberian market with an 81.4% share in 9mo01 (188 words)

Published: 11/16/2001

Siberia Airlines (Sibir) has confirmed that, in the first nine months of 2001, it was the market leader by far in Western Siberia. Overall, the market grew by 60.8%, with a total of 1.3m passengers carried by the six largest airlines. Sibir's market share - without VAL - stands at a massive 81.4% and reflects the growing dominance of the carrier in the region. During the same period, traffic at the region's six federal airports also grew by 15.5% to 1.4m, with Sibir's home base of Tolmachevo Airport servicing 754,200 passengers: an increase of 11.2 on the same period in 2000. All the other regional airports increased numbers, with the exception of Novokuznetsk, which was flat. According to Sibir's spokeman, Gleb Osokin, in the aftermath of the Vladivostokavia Tu-154 crash in July, the GSGA has been tightening controls on airlines in the region and four very minor carriers have since lost their licences, namely Aviaobzhemash (Omsk Region), Strezhevoi-based Prolog (Tomsk Region), Kemerovo Aviation Club (Kemerovo Region) and Berdsk Aviation Club (Novosibirsk Region).
