Polish naval aviation looks to the future

Published: 10/29/1997

As the Polish navy prepares for joining NATO,a number of new purchases are being planned. These include sea to sea missiles, such as Exocet, Harpoon and RBS-15 missiles. No official bid has yet been made. The Aviation Brigade of the Navy will have to upgrade its fleet significantly. By 2008,new antisubmarine helicopters will be needed to replace Mi-14s which are to be phased out from 2012. Helicopters of 10-12 t will be necessary, but no bid is expected before 2002. The fixed wing fleet also needs review. The navy is looking to convert its 28 MiG 21bis/UM into more modern types. Modernisation of the infrastructure is concentrating on two air bases at Babie Doly and Siemirowice, which need to be upgraded to NATO standards.(IN1097.9) (MM)
