New lighting for Minsk Airport
Published:
3/2/2000
The new lighting equipment brought into operation at Minsk airport on 23rd December 1999 should allow the airport to receive the highest, category three status under the ICAO classification.
The new computerised equipment should simplify maintenance and improve reliability, with most components coming from Siemens. The Russian firm, Radar, which was created from the FSU enterprise Aviaspetsmontazh, installed the equipment.
Funding for the new lighting project was provided by a loan from AKA Hermes, together with 94.5 billion Belarus roubles and US$3,389,500 allocated for use in 1999 and 48.6 billion Belarus roubles and US$3,389,500 for the year 2000 under the Programme of Development of the Civil Aviation for 1999-2000, adopted by the Belarus government decree number 754 of May 24th 1999.
The airport had previously received category two status under the ICAO classification using a Czech lighting system, which was considered obsolete when the airport was brought into operation in 1982.
The new lighting system should support the development of Minsk's business on its, 3,640 metres of runway, a cargo handling capacity of 300 tons a day, and the ability to handle 5.7m passengers a year operating 24 hours a day.
