Malev is to maintain some 50% of slots at Ferihegy airport in Hungary
Published:
4/4/2000
A new transport ministry decision on the distribution of airport slots from 1st July will continue to provide Hungarian airlines Malev with some 50% of all available slots at Ferihegy airport in Budapest, Helen Guraly, head of the airport coordination office told Econews. She also said that the current practice of allocating takeoff or landing time to airlines on a historical basis will be continued. According to the historical slot principle, an airline is given the same number of slots in the next timetable if it fully uses the slots provided to it in the previous period.
Ferihegy international airport in Budapest has the capacity for 40 flights and 4,800 passengers per hour. It has 33 aircraft parking slots and is the only airport in Hungary where slots apply. Malev has 234 weekly departures and arrivals at Ferihegy airport, Lufthansa has 87, Austrian airlines AUA 27, KLM 21, Swissair and British Airways 14 each and Air France 13. Set up in 1991, the Ferihegy Airport Coordination has carefully monitored EU rules and recommendations by international organisations in making its arrangements at the Budapest airport. In 1999, the Hungarian government was awarded a $250,000 US Trade and Development Agency grant for a feasibility study into the development of Ferihegy airport as a major regional hub and commercial centre, due for completion by September 2000.
