Chinese freight

Cargo traffic trade rebuilds

Published: 6/30/2000

According to reports in the South China Morning Post, China and Russia are working to build up cargo traffic after the dramatic fall of volume caused by Russia's tripling of import tariffs in March of this year. By the end of May the Chinese authorities had approved 21 freight routes to China for nine Russian airlines, with weekly carriers approved for 26 routes. The lion's share of the business was given to East Line which, after securing four scheduled routes to Shenyang in October, has opened four routes to Tianjin, Hohhot, Shijiazhuang and Urumqi from its Moscow base at Domodedovo Airport. The airline is also in discussions to form a Chinese registered joint venture to allow it to carry cargoes within the country and to third countries.
