An-2 suffers engine failure

Three minor injuries (180 words)
Published:
7/23/2001
On the 18th of July an An-2 belonging to state owned 2nd Sverdlovsk Airlines made an emergency landing while making a flight between two settlements in the Sverdlov (Ekaterinburg) region, in which three people of the eight on board received minor injuries.
The cause of the landing was the aircraft's engine failing 800 metres from the Sosva settlement airport after takeoff. While the pilot managed to land on the runway, the aircraft overshot and crashed into adjacent trees.
According to Alexander Tyutin, the General Director of 2nd Sverdlovsk Airlines, the An-2 in question is relatively new having been built in 1990 and in 1998 underwent a major overhaul subsequently flying 435 hours. According to Tyutin, the airline's experience with the aircraft is good and many of its 38 aircraft are considerably older than the An-2 that crashed, having been built in the seventies. It was also a fleet that he expected to continue operating into the future with the high levels and standard of maintenance that he believed the airline was providing.
The crash is currently under investigation.
